Hidden pirate haven accessible only through secret mangrove channels; accommodates 40 vessels.
The Taíno knew this place as a fishing camp and hurricane shelter, abandoned after disease and Spanish raids emptied their villages. Spanish explorers mapped the river mouth in 1523 but marked it "sin valor"—worthless—finding neither gold nor anchorage visible from sea. English logwood cutters used the upper river in the 1630s; one of them, Thomas Blackwell, discovered the hidden lagoon while fleeing Spanish patrols. When Providence fell to Spain in 1641, survivors remembered Blackwell's lagoon. Throughout the 1650s, as the Western Design threw the Caribbean into chaos, Brine Gate grew from emergency refuge to established settlement. By 1670, it has survived two Spanish expeditions that couldn't find the entrance, one English naval sweep that chose not to report it, and multiple attempted coups.

HISTORICAL BASIS: Brine Gate is a composite drawing from several real pirate havens: • SALT RIVER, JAMAICA - Remote anchorage used by pirates; name inspiration • TORTUGA - The French buccaneer base; organizational model • PORT ROYAL - Economic model; how pirate commerce actually worked • HIDDEN COVES THROUGHOUT CARIBBEAN - Pirates used numerous hidden anchorages; mangrove-protected harbors existed The "hidden entrance through mangroves" is geographically plausible. The organizational structure (rotating council, common fund, neutral ground) reflects actual buccaneer practice. The 1670 date places Brine Gate in the golden age of organized buccaneering, after Morgan has demonstrated what's possible but before the crackdown that follows Panama.
