Dutch-run chandlery with European goods
A sprawling ship store operated by a Dutchman who treats provisioning as a science. Van Hoorn sells spare spars, rope, canvas, tools, medicine, and a surprising amount of luxury—wine, preserved fruit, fine cloth—because crews with money often want to spend it immediately. The store runs on credit as much as coin, but Van Hoorn lends only to men who are likely to return. His clerks keep meticulous accounts, and his warehouses are guarded by men who look more like soldiers than shopkeepers.
